Nothing beats the new arrivals and long awaited scents of Spring. From getting out in the garden for the first time in the season to getting out in the woods and picking out the perfect spot to wait for that big tom turkey, the joys of Spring are in the air. Several events in the past week have reminded me that Spring is in full force.
Last week, my daughter practiced shooting her 4-10 in preparation for her very first youth turkey season. Although hesitant in the beginning, she did remarkably well and her confidence grew each time she saw her shot pattern close in on the center of the target. She ended up shooting the whole box of shells--I think it’s safe to say she’s hooked!
Later in the week, my children brought me two baby bunnies they “rescued” from our dog. The bunnies were so young that their eyes were not open yet. Google has proven to be a wonderful tool for getting a crash course on raising small animals! Bunny-rearing was not in my plans, but I guess I’m up for the challenge.
As I was wrapping up the week, I decided to take a walk down in the woods and breathe in the mild evening air. To my surprise, I stumbled on a honey hole of morels. I picked a handful and showed them to my family. Once they saw them, they slipped their boots on, grabbed a bag and ran eagerly into the woods. We ended the evening with a nice mess of morels ready to be enjoyed.
If one week has given me this many reminders of the season, I wonder what’s in store next week?
